This course includes a series of lectures, demonstrations and practical workshops that introduce the participants to the technical, optical and aesthetic properties of the 17th century oil painting on canvas. The focus will be on the reconstruction of a section from a 17th century oil painting. Special attention will be given to the paintings of Frans Hals, Rembrandt and Goltzius in the Rijksmuseum and in the Frans Hals Museum.
Due to the refurbishment of the premises of the SRAL in Maastricht, the location of the course has been changed to Amsterdam and Haarlem.

A limited number of scholarships have been made available by the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science for participants from Central- and Eastern Europe and Turkey (course fee and accommodation). These do not cover travel expenses or meals and are subject to a selection procedure. In order to apply for a scholarship, you need to send in a letter of motivation, together with your application form and recent curriculum vitae.

Programme

During the practical workshops participants have the opportunity to:
- examine a 17th century painting;
- stretch the canvas support and prepare it with animal glue and an oil ground;
- experiment with different painting techniques (glazing, scumbling);
- transfer the composition or design to the support using different underdrawing techniques;
- build up the so-called "dead colour" and under paint;
- apply final layers, glazes and details.
