This summer school is a collaborative effort of the Academic Medical Center (AMC) and the AMSU.

This year's course will offer the opportunity for students to get acquainted with biomedical research in the field of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. They will receive hands-on experience in the field of laboratory research into disease mechanisms and the development of therapeutic options. These research lines range from studies on animal models for several gastrointestinal and liver diseases to the development of gene therapy for such diseases.

Applicant Profile

Advanced students in medicine, biology and health sciences with knowledge of biomedical and clinical sciences and recent graduates can apply. Experience in laboratory research is not obligatory.

Application closed

Candidates will be selected on the basis of their detailed resumée and written motivation. Please send in your curriculum vitae and letter of motivation together with your application form, as soon as possible but no later than Friday, June 29, 2007. Applications are completed after full payment of the course fee is received.

This course is currently full, however, we are still accepting applications: selected candates will be included in a waiting list and as soon as places will be available, they will be offered places in the order of receipt of application - from the earliest to the newest.

Location: The Academic Medical Center (AMC), University of Amsterdam (UvA). Meibergdreef 15, 1105 AZ, Amsterdam. The AMC can be reached in 25 minutes from Central Station Amsterdam by subway, direction Gein, stop Holendrecht.

Fee: Applications received before or on June 1, 2007: € 890,-; after June 1: € 1040,-.
(Course fee includes educational programme, accommodation*, public transport in Amsterdam, welcome drink, social & cultural programme**, closing buffet.

Registration: Registration will take place in the city centre of Amsterdam: exact location to be announced.

Note: Although we strongly advise to participate to the entire course in order to benefit completely from it, applicants may request to take part for the period of (the first) two weeks only. Participants to the first two weeks only, must clearly specify their reasons in the motivation letter, in order to be accepted by the selection committee. These participants will receive a certificate of attendance for the specific period of attendance.

* Accommodation

Accommodation is included in the course fee. Please note that accommodation will be provided in modest student facilities in shared, double rooms. Single room can be asked for but will be allocated depending on availability.

** Social & Cultural Programme

A variety of cultural and social activities is offered, such as sight-seeing tours, visit to a museum, concerts, theatre shows and a boat tour through the canals of Amsterdam. The AMC is also known for its large collection of Dutch modern art after 1964.

Programme

After several introductory lectures the students will join post-docs and PhD students in the lab with whom they will perform ongoing experiments. The students can choose to do a single period of two weeks or to do two periods of two weeks in two different research groups.

Appended Terms & Conditions

Written cancellations received before Thursday, June 1, 2007 will be refunded, 15% administrative expenses will be deducted for administrative expenses.
No refunds will be made for cancellations received after June 1, 2007 or for non-attendance. In case of cancellation the course materials will be forwarded in any case.
The Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer University reserves the right to cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances without any liability for damages arising. In that case the participation sum, if already paid, will be refunded in full.
All participants in the courses are bound by the Board's Standard Conditions, which will be sent to you upon request.
