Civic journalism is an alternative approach to gathering information and reporting the news. Its goal is to increase the participation of the general public in fostering a workable civil society in local communities, it looks at citizens as primary sources and as participants in the civic lives of their communities.
It pursues a journalistic agenda aimed at empowering citizens to more actively influence the political agenda of their communities. It seeks to foster a public dialogue that encourage civic envolvement.
Raul Ramirez ran workshops on Civic Journalism for the AMSU in collaboration with the European Journalism Centre in 2002 and 2003. The EJC is an independent international centre for the further training of journalists, located in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
