Candidates will be selected on the basis of their detailed curriculum vitae and letter of motivation. • Prof.Dr. Ulrich Schiessl: Introductory Lecture: 'From treetrunk to sculpture: techniques and materials of medieval polychrome sculpture'.

Group I:
    • Birgit Maas: Practical workshop: woodcarving: participants will experiment with different tools and techniques, carving motives out of oak and limewood;
Group II:
    • Practical workshop: preparation of wooden supports: sizing with animal glue, build-up of several layers of a chalk ground;
    • Practical workshop: Pressbrocades: the technical composition of this three-dimensional application technique will be explained through the presentation of case studies. Based on historic examples, participants will make several leafs of brocade.

• Practical workshop: polishing of the ground layers;
Group I:
    • Practical workshop: application of different decoration techniques (pastiglia, engraving, gems, etcetera);
    • Practical workshop: sizing of the ground and application of bole, as the first preparation layer for gold leaf;
Group II:
    • Demonstrations and practical workshop: preparation and extraction of medieval pigments out of minerals, insects and plants.

    • Demonstrations and practical workshop: preparation and extraction of medieval pigments out of minerals, insects and plants;
Group II:
    • Practical workshop: application of different decoration techniques (pastiglia, engraving, gems, etcetera);
    • Practical workshop: sizing of the ground and application of bole, as the first preparation layer for gold leaf;
Afternoon
• Afternoon off. Option to visit the town, different musea, city tour, or just rest.

Group I:
    • Practical workshop: application of different sorts of metal leaf: gold, silver, tin;
    • Practical Workshop: burnishing of guilded areas;
Group II:
    • Demonstration: The proces of medieval paint making;
    • Practical workshop: different pigments will be ground in different binding media such as oil, egg yolk or animal glue, and be applied on test boards;
Afternoon
• Same programme and switch of group I and II.

Thursday, July 3, 2008
• Practical workshop: participants will experiment with the typical build-up of characteristic paint layers such as azurite, malachite, vermilion with glazes, etcetera;
• Practical workshop: in groups of two, participants will paint their pressbrocades and work with different decoration techniques on the burnished guilding, such as punching, engraving, sgraffito, shell gold.

Friday, July 4, 2008
• Practical workshop: continuing/finishing of the different decoration techniques and paint layers;
Afternoon
• evaluation and discussion of the final results;
• fare-well party;
4.30 PM end of course.
