Biobusiness Ph.D. Summer School 2008

This summer school is a collaborative effort of the Academic Medical Center (AMC) and the AMSU.

This year, a unique new Summer School is launched for Ph.D.'s to learn about business in Life Sciences. Knowledge of the business field and the current market is an important asset for all researchers in the rapidly growing Life Sciences area, but especially for those who are looking for career opportunities in the industry. The aim of the Biobusiness Ph.D. Summer School is to increase the understanding of the international field of biomedical business and to help Ph.D.'s find the best next step in their career.
In this interactive two week course you learn the basics and backgrounds of the biomedical industry and you are introduced to several international companies in the region, through organised site visits. Specialized guest speakers give lectures and are available for individual contact with the participants.

Applicant Profile

This course is primarily aimed at Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows in Life Sciences areas, in their final year(s).

Application

Candidates will be selected on the basis of their detailed resumée. Please send in your curriculum vitae and a copy of your university-diploma together with your application form, as soon as possible but no later than Saturday, June 1, 2008. Applications are completed after full payment of the course fee is received.
Selected candidates are requested to send a copy of their passport and an original passport photo for the Amsterdam Public Transport Pass (included in the course fee).

Certificate: Certificate of attendance on completion of the course and/or 2 ECTS.

Location: The Academic Medical Center (AMC), University of Amsterdam (UvA). Meibergdreef 15, 1105 AZ, Amsterdam.
The AMC can be reached in 25 minutes from Central Station Amsterdam by subway, direction Gein, stop Holendrecht.

Course Fee: € 595,-.
Course fee includes educational programme, company visits, public transport in Amsterdam, welcome drinks, social & cultural programme*.

Accommodation: Accommodation is not included in the fee, but can be booked through the AMSU Housing Service. These rooms are located in the University of Amsterdam (UvA) facilities in Amsterdam.
If you prefer to stay in a hotel, please make your own reservation according to your preferences. It is important that you make your reservations as soon as possible, as Amsterdam is extremely popular in the summer.

Many executives from various positions in biomedical companies, investors, governmental agencies and universities. Names will be confirmed and announced here ASAP.

Programme

This preliminary program is under revision. The final programme information will be available 1 June, 2008.
The program covers main topics like product development, patents & licenses, from start-up to IPO, biopharma business models, new market opportunities, pharmacopolicy, pharmacoeconomics, business ethics, entrepreneurship and emerging diseases.
The course includes technology break-out sessions and many company visits.

* Social & Cultural Programme

A variety of cultural and social activities is offered through a Cultural Pass, such as sight-seeing tours, visit to a museum, concerts, theatre shows and a boat tour through the canals of Amsterdam. The AMC is also known for its large collection of Dutch modern art after 1964.

Appended Terms & Conditions

Written cancellations received before Saturday, June 1, 2008 will be refunded, 15% administrative expenses will be deducted for administrative expenses.
No refunds will be made for cancellations received after June 1, 2008 or for non-attendance. In case of cancellation the course materials will be forwarded in any case.
The Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer University reserves the right to cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances without any liability for damages arising. In that case the participation sum, if already paid, will be refunded in full.
All participants in the courses are bound by the Board's Standard Conditions, which will be sent to you upon request.
