Bridging Health Care with IT (medic 2)

Healthcare has never been on more pressure than today! The healthcare staffing shortage along with the enormous grows in the chronic disease population puts heavy demands on available resources. In these contexts, the quality and efficiency of healthcare and the safe practice of delivering healthcare services are acquiring much attention.

The future of healthcare now is to take advantage of technological advancements for realizing great improvements in service delivery to patients and in support of clinicians in their daily working routines. Furthermore, the evidence-based medical knowledge base is rapidly growing as a result of automated clinical data gathering and the rapid developments in genomic and other molecular research technologies.

At the heart of these developments lies the field of biomedical informatics.

This Summer School illustrates how biomedical informatics will impact healthcare and is essential training for the next generation of healthcare professionals who are at the forefront of enhancing healthcare's quality, efficiency and safety.

Lectures, practical work (mondays through fridays),  final presentations by participants, certificate and a social program are part of this course.

Participants Profile
Advanced students in medicine, biology and health sciences with knowledge of biomedical and clinical sciences.  Informatics students with basic knowledge in Medicine as well as recent graduates in the mentioned disciplines.

Selection process:
Applicants should submit (by fax, scanned documents or post) their completed application form (available at the right side of this page under downloads) together with:  

- A recent CV, 
- A letter of motivation, 
- A letter of recommendation of your home institution, 
- A copy  of your passport / ID card for EU citizens.

- An original passport-size photo of you (after the selection process)

A selection on basis of your curriculum vitae, a written motivation and a letter of recommendation is part of the application procedure.

Course details:

Dates: 4th to 16th July July, 2010.

Capacity: 25 participants.

Language of Instruction: English.

Certificate: Certificate of attendance on completion of the course. 

Course Fee: Euro 430,00 for application received before the 1st of June 2010 (DEADLINE EXTENDED); Euro 530,00 for application received after the 1st of June 2010.

The course fee includes: educational programme,  public transport in Amsterdam, welcome drink, social and cultural program, closing buffet.  It does not include accommodation.

Accommodation Fee:  Euro 275,00 per person in a shared (double) room, bed linen included. Please note that accommodation will be provided in modest student facilities in double rooms. Single room can be asked for but will be allocated depending on availability and will cost more.

Deadline for application:  Early bid deadline 15th of May 2010.   

Location: Academic Medical Center (AMC), University of Amsterdam. Meibergdreef 15, 1105 AZ, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The AMC can be reached in 25 minutes from Central Station Amsterdam by subway, direction Gein, stop Holendrecht.

Programme: the course programme will be published here soon

Social and cultural Programme: A variety of cultural and social activities is offered, such as sight-seeing tours, visit to a museum, concerts, theatre shows and a boat tour through the canals of Amsterdam. The AMC is also known for its large collection of Dutch modern art after 1964.

Appended Terms & Conditions
Applications are subject to a selection process. From the moment the applicant is informed s/he is selected by the AMSU Office, s/he becomes "Participant" and from that moment the course fee is due to be paid. 

Cancellations must be made in writing. If a cancellation is received before the AMSU inform the applicant s/he is selected no cancellation fee has to be paid. If cancellation is received after the selection message from the AMSU Office, 15% of the course fee is due to be paid as cancellation fee to cover administrative costs. If cancellation is received later than 14 days before the beginning of the course the "Participant" must pay a cancellation fee corresponding to 100% of the course fee.

The Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer University reserves the right to cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances without any liability for damages arising. In that case the participation sum, if already paid, will be refunded in full.

All participants in the courses are bound by the Board's Standard Conditions, which will be sent to you upon request.
